Well it has been a long long time but finally we are seeing some movement here on site. The Garden Centre re-opened today under new ownership, we have an Equestrian Supplier on site, a Dog Grooming Parlour and are just waiting for an on-site furniture shop to open, this should be in the next week. The Coffee Shop has also re-opened under new management.

The weather has played havoc with our experience days so we are hoping that better weather will now be with us. The nesting season started early and we already have the first of our rescued babies to look after.

Our new Education room is open and also provides a welcoming waiting area where you can get a tea or coffee whilst browsing all the information displayed or just chat with your friends.

After visiting your centre the other Sunday morning my son and I were entering the M62 towards Bury where we saw a Buzzard sat on the fence by the side of the motorway.

Well it has been a long time since we have added things here but since then Julie who has written above has become one of our very valued volunteers and is very genuine in her comments and is showing a true commitment.

It has been a very hard few months with constant battles with the weather and ongoing works at the centre. We are pleased to confirm that our plans for an 'All Weather' facility are finally coming together. We will have an indoor area to allow experiences whatever the weather. This will also give us an area to rehabilitate injured birds. We will also have a further indoor area to allow workshops, incl photography and art as well as a classroom and hospital room.

We have had several new additions to our bird family and we will be adding details to the main site soon.

The Garden Centre adjacent to us has been closed for a while along with the cafe and we are happy to say that these will soon be re-opening with new owners, lots of exciting plans in the offing.

Further update to follow.

No further sightings of the bird mentioned above but we have today been trying to capture a Female Harris Hawk at High Legh in Lymm. A lady called us on Tuesday to say the bird was in her field, looking at her and calling. She wasn’t sure what kind of bird it was so took a photo and emailed to us and sure enough it was a Harris. We went out and spent a couple of hours but with no sighting. This morning the lady called again to say bird was in a field opposite so we went over and she was sat in a tree next to the road, she took off over a field and we followed her. She sat calling to us and though we tried everything we could she would not come down. She looks well and is probably hunting for herself, she is wearing anklets but no jesses, she may have pulled these out. We couldn’t see any rings and she wasn’t wearing a bell. If this might be your bird, give us a call and we can give you more info.

This is so sad, I am a bird lover myself and have 3 parrots, I am new to falconry, but it seems to be the same with both types of birds, people think it so cool to have these animals, yet dont understand the full truth of keeping them, its something I feel so angry about.
I believe anyone who wants to keep these exotic animals should be educated about them first, maybe we should do what they do in america have a test before you can keep one.
I am doing my lantra awards, to learn more about them but it still does not make me a falconer far from it,and I would love to own a bird of prey but i am not going to get one because iI work quite long hours, and have to look after my parrots too, which take a lot of my time and are out of thier cages 3 hours a day, I dont have the time for a hawk too, but that doesnt stop me from learning and still enjoying them that way

Words cannot express the deep sorrow and anger that we are feeling at this time. In this past week we have had to have two beautiful young Harris Hawks put to sleep. We are now going to do everything in our power to try to get some kind of legislation into force in relation to people buying/owning Birds of Prey. Working alongside specialist Avian Vets and like minded 'TRUE' Falconers we MUST try to get the laws changed. Last week a young Male Harris was brought into us with the old excuse 'I'm moving home and can't keep him'. This young bird we were told had been bitten by a rabbit whilst hunting. On examining the birds feet it was obvious that there was a major problem and this guy hadn't done anything. We took the bird to an Avian specialist who confirmed that the damage had occurred some 6 - 8 weeks ago and was most probably caused by electricution, possibly from a electrified wire fence. The birds feet had basically been fried and at least one toe was ready to drop off as gangrene had set in and other toes were 'dead' with further damage to the feet.
If there was any way the bird could have had quality of life for the future the vets fees wouldn't have been an issue we would gladly have paid, but this sadly was not the case. Most toes would have had to be amputated and it was possible that the remaining would have to be amputated in the future. The Vet very kindly did not charge us for the consultation, he was as appalled as we were.
The previous owner had left this bird to suffer for at least 6 weeks. Our other sad loss was Faith, she was brought to us a little while ago after a friend had gone to purchase a Hawk from a breeder and saw the condition of a young Female who had a twisted beak and toes, the Breeder had let this bird get to five months with no vet care. In his words he was going to 'knock her on the head'. Our friend brought her to us, the breeder happy to let her go so that he didn't have to deal with the problem. We tried our hardest with Faith as we called her, she had her beak coped back as far as possible to enable her to eat and the crossed toes were amputated to enable her to grip, unfortunately her condition worsened and again we had to consider quality of life so the sad decision had to be made.

These are just two of the horrendous things we have dealt with and we hear of and deal with others every day.

Maybe this is not what you wanted to read, but not every story has a happy ending and people have to be made aware of what is happening out there. Anybody can go out and buy any Bird of Prey, they don't have to have any knowledge, most don't even have any common sense. Yes there are genuine people and there are genuine breeders who do only sell to experienced Falconers, but there are also a lot who just want to take your money.

If you feel as strongly about this as we do, we would like to hear from you. The more support we can raise the more chance we have of trying to make sure that things like this don't happen.

Well it's been a long time since we have had a spare minute to catch up on here. Things have been so busy at the Centre with lots of new arrivals, which we will add to the site as soon as possible.

The weather in April was great and we achieved lots of building work only to be hit with high winds at the beginning of May that caused lots of damage, so two steps forward and three steps back seems to be the way of things at the moment.

Our volunteers have worked really hard to help us keep things going so a great big THANK YOU to all of them. Ted our latest volunteer, has really been thrown in at the deep end but is proving to be a real asset, he along with Phil & Pete have worked wonders on our new entrance and it is looking great.

We will update you in more detail as soon as we have a chance to sit down for more than 5 minutes!
